An abandoned cart email sequence is a short series of messages that brings shoppers back to the products they left behind.
To regain sales, the sequence should:
- Remind shoppers about the exact products they left behind.
- Send the first email within 2 to 4 hours.
- Address common objections in the second email.
- Use discounts selectively instead of rewarding every abandonment.
- Stop sending as soon as the customer places an order.
A two- or three-email sequence usually works better than one generic reminder. Klaviyo recommends sending the first message 2 to 4 hours after checkout begins and the second message 20 to 48 hours later. It also recommends avoiding a discount in the first email.
Abandoned Cart Email Sequence at a Glance
| Timing | Main purpose | Recommended content | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Email 1 | 2 to 4 hours after abandonment | Remind the shopper | Abandoned products, the main benefit and a "Return to checkout" button |
| Email 2 | 20 to 48 hours later | Remove hesitation | Shipping, returns, product questions, reviews or customer feedback |
| Email 3 | End of the normal buying window | Give the shopper a final reason to act | Free shipping, customer support or a limited incentive when appropriate |
The timing depends on the product and buying decision. Someone buying a $25 skincare product may decide quickly. Someone comparing mattresses, furniture or high-end electronics may need more time.
Use the Right Trigger: Abandoned Cart or Abandoned Checkout?
An abandoned checkout email targets someone who started checkout and provided contact information. An abandoned cart email targets someone who added a product to their cart, provided your ecommerce platform captured their email address.
Use the Started Checkout trigger when it is available. It identifies shoppers who have moved further through the buying process. Use an Added to Cart trigger when your store can reliably connect the cart activity to an email address.
Klaviyo distinguishes between these triggers. Shopify defines an abandoned checkout as an incomplete checkout where the customer provided an email address.
Your flow should include:
- A checkout or cart abandonment trigger
- A dynamic product block
- A link that returns the shopper to the saved cart or checkout
- A filter that removes anyone who places an order
- A re-entry rule to prevent repeated messages to the same person
- An inventory check that suppresses emails for unavailable products
Email 1: Send a Useful Reminder, Not a Sales Pitch
The first email should arrive while the product is still fresh in the shopper's mind. Keep it focused on the abandoned items and the next step.
Include These Elements
- Product image
- Product name, variant, size or colour
- Price and quantity
- One primary call to action
- A short reminder of the product's main benefit
- Support contact information if shoppers may have questions
Example
Subject: Still thinking about the Nike Mercurial football boots?
You left the Nike Mercurial football boots in your cart.
The lightweight design helps support quick movement and close control. Your selected size is still available.
[Return to checkout]

Use real availability, benefits and support details in the final version. Do not add unrelated product recommendations, a lengthy company introduction or several competing calls to action. Klaviyo recommends featuring the abandoned products prominently and avoiding unrelated products that could distract shoppers from completing checkout.
Email 2: Address the Reason the Shopper Hesitated
The second email should answer the question that may have prevented the purchase. A reminder cannot resolve uncertainty about shipping costs, sizing, returns, product quality or payment.
Match the content to the most common abandonment reasons for your store.
| Likely objection | What the email should explain |
|---|---|
| "Is this product worth the price?" | Product benefits, materials, warranty and useful comparison points |
| "Will it fit or work for me?" | Size guidance, compatibility information or product support |
| "Can I return it?" | Return period, conditions and refund process |
| "When will it arrive?" | Delivery times, shipping costs and tracking |
| "Can I trust this store?" | Customer reviews, guarantees, payment security and contact details |
| "Why did my payment fail?" | Alternative payment methods and a direct support option |
Baymard Institute research shows that some shoppers abandon carts because they are browsing or are not ready to buy. Its research reports that 42% of US online shoppers abandoned a cart for that reason, while 17% cited a checkout process that was too long or complicated.
That distinction matters. Use email to recover shoppers who need a reminder or reassurance. Fix the checkout when customers are leaving because of hidden costs, confusing forms, slow pages or payment problems.
Example
Subject: Questions about your order?
Before you complete your order, you may be wondering about delivery and returns.
- Free returns within 30 days
- Orders ship within two business days
- Secure checkout with credit card, PayPal and Apple Pay
Your cart is still available here:
[Complete your order]
Replace these details with your actual policies and payment options.
Do Not Offer a Discount in the First Email
A discount can recover some sales, but offering one in the first email can reduce profit and teach customers to wait for an offer.
A better sequence is:
- Email 1: no discount, just a clear reminder
- Email 2: answer objections and reinforce the product's value
- Final email: offer free shipping or a targeted discount when the margin supports it
Segment incentives by customer type. A first-time customer may receive a welcome offer. A repeat customer may respond better to free shipping or product reassurance.
Klaviyo recommends delaying incentives and warns that immediate discounts can train customers to wait for an offer. Unique coupon codes can also reduce code sharing.
Use genuine urgency only. "Your cart expires tonight" is misleading if the cart does not expire. Use accurate statements such as:
- "Free shipping ends Sunday"
- "Only three units remain"
- "Your promotional code expires at midnight"
Write Subject Lines That Reflect the Email
Good abandoned cart subject lines are specific, clear and consistent with the email content.
Examples:
- Your cart is waiting
- Still interested in the [product name]?
- You left something behind
- Need help choosing your size?
- Your [product name] is still available
- Complete your order before free shipping ends
Avoid deceptive subject lines such as "Your order has shipped" when the customer has not purchased.
In the United States, the FTC says commercial emails must use accurate header information and non-deceptive subject lines. They must also provide an opt-out method and include a valid physical postal address.
Make the Recovery Link Frictionless
The email should take the shopper directly back to the saved cart or checkout, not to the homepage.
Check that:
- The cart contains the correct products
- The selected size, colour and quantity are preserved
- The discount code applies correctly
- The checkout works on mobile
- The payment methods are available
- The button works in major email clients
- The customer does not need to search for the product again
Shopify recovery emails include a link that lets customers continue checkout. Shopify also reports sessions, completed orders, conversion rate, revenue and average order value generated by recovery emails.
Stop Emails After the Customer Buys
This is one of the most important safeguards in the flow.
Add a condition such as:
Send only if the customer has placed zero orders since entering the abandoned cart flow.
Check the condition before every subsequent email, not only when the customer first enters the automation. Otherwise, a shopper could purchase after Email 1 and still receive Email 2 or Email 3.
Klaviyo recommends filtering out profiles who have placed an order since starting the flow.
Also disable duplicate abandoned cart automations. If Shopify sends a default recovery email while Klaviyo sends a separate flow, the same shopper may receive overlapping messages. Klaviyo recommends turning off the ecommerce platform's default messages when using a customised Klaviyo flow.
Investigate Payment and Inventory Failures
Not every abandoned checkout reflects indecision. The customer may have experienced:
- Card decline
- Incorrect billing information
- Failed 3-D Secure authentication
- Payment processor errors
- Out-of-stock inventory
- Invalid discount codes
- Unsupported shipping destination
Shopify lists these as possible causes of abandoned checkouts and provides payment event details for merchants to review.
When the problem is technical, a support-focused message is more useful than a generic reminder:
We noticed there may have been a problem completing your payment. You can try another payment method or reply to this email for help.
Do not promote an item that is no longer available. Update inventory and suppression rules before the email sends.
Measure Recovered Profit, Not Just Opens
Track the metrics that show whether the flow creates profitable sales:
- Recovery rate: recovered orders ÷ delivered abandonment emails
- Recovered revenue per recipient: recovered revenue ÷ delivered emails
- Average order value: recovered revenue ÷ recovered orders
- Discount cost: total discount value used in recovered orders
- Gross profit after discounts and shipping
- Unsubscribe and spam complaint rate
Compare results by:
- New versus returning customers
- Started Checkout versus Added to Cart
- Mobile versus desktop
- Product category
- Cart value
- Payment method
- Discount versus no-discount path
Revenue attributed to an email platform can overstate the effect of a flow because some shoppers would have purchased without receiving the email. For a clearer result, hold out a small control group and compare its purchase rate with the group that received the sequence.
The Practical Formula
Use this sequence as the starting point:
- Trigger the flow when a known shopper starts checkout.
- Send Email 1 after 2 to 4 hours.
- Show the exact abandoned products and link directly to checkout.
- Send Email 2 20 to 48 hours later with answers to common objections.
- Add a final incentive only for segments where the extra margin is justified.
- Suppress purchasers, unavailable products and duplicate flows.
- Measure recovered profit against a control group.
The goal is not to email every abandoned cart more often. It is to identify why shoppers leave, address the relevant hesitation and make returning to checkout easy.
